Following a year-long group of "Reading Freshly" Gendlin’s book Focusing with fellow Focusers which finished in September 2024, Mary gives a personal account of the experience and how reflecting on it led her to unexpected places in considering what Focusing is or can be. She will share her experiences with participants, inviting pausing along the way with short exercises and sharing.

Topics that Mary will touch upon include:

  • About ‘the body’ – just what is it?
  • The Power of Instances – a missing ‘step’ in introducing Focusing?
  • Felt sensing and listening – identical or fraternal twins?
  • Expanding on forms of listening, including, but not only ‘Focusing Partnerships’ type listening – Gendlin mentions 4 types but only 1 is generally used?
  • Towards a ‘double helix’ way of conveying Focusing – formal and informal ways combined, including drawing in aspects of TAE (Thinking at the Edge) and microprocesses that facilitate the ‘inner act’
  • Focusing and Society Section of Focusing : “A society of pattern makers is coming” says Gendlin. Can we develop ideas from this final chapter in the book?

Some familiarity with Focusing is helpful, but no prior experience with Focusing or philosophy is required. All are welcome to attend and participate.

Format

We use Zoom videoconferencing for our online classes. In this webinar format, you will see the presenter and host, but you will not be seen. You will be able to ask questions during the webinar by typing them. Highlights presenters may at times invite a small number of participants to unmute or join them onscreen during the webinar (optional).

You will need to have a computer/mobile device. Calling in by phone is also possible but not preferred. All registered participants will be sent a link to the video recording approximately two weeks following the class. So if you are unable to attend the live webinar, you will still be able to view it for one month.

Bio

Mary Jennings is a Coordinator & Focusing Trainer, based in Dublin, Ireland. She led a series for TIFI members called "Reading Freshly" this past year. As well as a Mindfulness Teacher, Mary has a background in communications and has worked with many organisations over the years in the area of brand identity. Inspired by Gendlin’s Philosophy of the Implicit, particularly in the area of language, she is interested in how we can use Gene’s insights to fully express more of what we know in fresh, felt-sensed language. Her approach is to facilitate people to draw on their own experience, drawing out the richness that is already there, using accessible, playful practices.
