The recent pandemic is affecting the whole world in a catastrophic way, as declared by the WHO (World Health Organization). It is obviously affecting all our countries and community groups. It is urgent to reflect and prepare ourselves in an adequate way to act as real agents of change in the spaces where we have influence.
This short course aims to describe and explain skills and abilities which can be applied in crisis and emergency interventions, both on a group and individual level. The goal is to enhance helping professionals and psychotherapists' knowledge of possible interventions in this current situation. To this end, theoretical and practical-experiential elements will be provided.
Objectives:
- To know and discuss the main concepts of intervention in crisis and emergency
- To know some intervention techniques at both individual and community levels
- To know empathy skills and abilities of use in crisis interventions
- To analyze and discuss the psychosocial notions of trauma produced by natural disasters and catastrophes
- To learn some models and techniques of individual and group intervention used in cases of natural disasters and other catastrophes
Contents:
(1) General background on the pandemic and its implications and consequences.
(2) A clinical approach to individual intervention.
(3) A community approach to psychosocial intervention.
(4) The psychosocial effects of trauma produced by disasters, with an emphasis on group interventions in crisis, and on community resilience developed during these events.
(5) Various strategies for psychosocial intervention with affected communities. The role of collective memory and individual memory in the processes of community repair and reconstruction.
(6) The importance of validating the individual and collective experiences of those affected, as a preventive element of psychosocial trauma; the role of psychologists and therapists in these processes.
