Reflecting on our felt experience of being a member of a larger group, without losing ourselves...
Having met for four of these meetings already, a new sense of ‘Being Together’ and ‘Being Focusing’ is emerging. A new kind of group culture is carrying forward, where we are meeting purposely and spontaneously to explore how we might be together relationally. It is not a therapy group, or a teaching space or just a place to have a chat, but a laboratory for our experience of Being with each other in a Focusing way. We will continue to use the steps forward identified in Gendlin’s paper, "Fitting In and Pouring Out, and Relating" to organise our thoughts and experiences around, loosely these are,
- Our struggle to speak in large focusing spaces is inevitable, and need not be surprising nor disappointing. He anticipates that we are so hungry to be listened to, that we fill up the space with heartfelt words, only to find that our listener cannot understand it all.
- The body instantly senses that if we can’t “pour out” all our feelings, then we aren’t welcome at all.
- We get stuck between having to choose between “pouring out” all of ourselves (and still not being heard) or giving up on being listened to and “fitting in,” (which can feel even more painful in Focusing spaces).
- The new invitation is to notice how far we’ve already travelled in our Focusing practice and ask ourselves if we are “strong enough to go further”? Can we find a more relational way?
As we move into the the last few sessions, I’m anticipating the Focusing-informed culture we have co-created will hold us more. To get us here one essential step has been to differentiate body-feelings which are habitual, quickly formed reactions based on our past experiences from slower, felt sensing which has awareness and curiosity about the more… . Taking the slowing down, pausing and Focusing from our dyad practice into the larger group has all sorts of challenges, but we can be there for each other with this and find the fresh, emergent, newness together.
Other than membership in The International Focusing Institute (TIFI), the only things needed to join is an ability to follow your felt sense, and an interest in trying on a new perspective. You can also attend any number of sessions.
For each session a new email announcement will be sent and you need to register freshly each time.
