May 1 marks eight years since Gene Gendlin passed away at the age of 90. Since his passing, interest in his philosophy and his work have continued to grow. The Eugene T. Gendlin Center for Research in Experiential Philosophy and Psychology has given several grants to promote high level academic research in psychology, and has just announced the call for papers for the 2026 Gendlin Philosophy Prize. The Gendlin Center has sponsored several Symposia and has recently begun to offer more frequent, shorter online events to carry forward Gene's legacy. A series of conversations called "Gendlin and..." has just been launched, including a conversation with Jim Hart and one with the Ven. Losang Gendun.
Our most significant tribute to Gene is coming up in June 2026. For what would have been Gene's 100th year, we return to the city of his birth for the next International Focusing Conference with the theme Sensing Forward. We will be opening registration this summer. We are eager to make significant scholarships available, and to ensure that we can make the event everything we'd like it to be to honor him fittingly. Please consider making a donation toward these ends.
What meant the most to Gene was to have his work remain availalble. We achieve that in many ways, foremost of which is the Gendlin Online Library, which can be found at focusing.org/gendlin. It was renovated a few years ago thanks to your donations as well as a generous grant. It is a treasure trove of Gene's writings.
Finally, please remember that the memorial website remains up at EugeneGendlin.com, where you can re-read his obituary (in English, Spanish, German and Portuguese). You can also see photos of him and read the warm tributes written by those who either knew him personally or benefitted from his life and his work.
Videos of Gene are available in the Nada Lou Original Focusing Masters Collection on our new Focusing Videos site at videos.focusing.org, or you can check out our YouTube playlist of videos of him.
Those who knew Gene certainly miss his brilliant mind, his great sense of humor and his warm smile. We are grateful for those who carry forward his work with such enthusiasm, vision and generosity of spirit.
We hope to see you in Vienna!
