From Fear to Flow: A Focusing Approach to Public Speaking Anxiety

Sorry Registration for this event ended on February 1st, 2024 11:15 AM
Registration is closed for this event
Traditional approaches to speaking anxiety have treated frightened and doubtful parts like enemies to be eradicated. True speaker confidence, however, does not come from denying who we are, but from including and allowing all parts of ourselves. Through guided exercises, Fiona invites participants to get curious about what happens inside when asked to speak, and invites us to give compassionate company to what comes. She will help us sense our way into creating content. This webinar offers the opportunity to work with speaking anxiety, not against it, in a way that ultimately leads to real change. Some familiarity with Focusing will be helpful, though all are welcome.

When asked to speak in front of a group, what happens to you, inside?

You may have parts that really want you to speak. But you may also have parts that feel fearful, doubtful and self-critical, resulting in an inner tug of war that makes you feel miserable.

She invites us to sense what it would feel like ‘if this whole thing were resolved’. We might sense how it feels to be a confident speaker, and in doing so, sense what could be stopping such confidence, and feel empathy for what comes.

In another exercise, Fiona invites participants to get a feel for what they want to say. Many people get overwhelmed at the ‘creation of content’ stage, with ideas swirling around chaotically in their heads. Fiona will lead us through a guided exercise to help sense our way into creating content.

This webinar offers the opportunity to work with speaking anxiety, not against it, in a way that ultimately leads to real change. Some familiarity with Focusing will be helpful, though all are welcome.

Format

We use Zoom videoconferencing for our online classes. In this webinar format, you will see the presenter and host, but you will not be seen. You will be able to ask questions during the webinar by typing them. Highlights presenters may at times invite a small number of participants to unmute or join them onscreen during the webinar (optional).

You will need to have a computer/mobile device. Calling in by phone is also possible but not preferred. All registered participants will be sent a link to the video recording approximately two weeks following the class. So if you are unable to attend the live webinar, you will still be able to view it for one month.
