In this webinar, Severson will investigate some of the philosophical roots of Gendlin’s philosophy, with a focus on the problem of racism in modern American society. Gendlin joins postmodern thinkers in the questioning and rejecting of disembodied universal truths, but retains concern over the danger of tribalism that can emerge from the resulting relativism. From his perspective as a philosopher, Severson suggests connections between Gendlin’s philosophy of language and the contemporary problems of systemic racism.
This class is oriented toward therapists and academics with an interest in the connection between Gendlin’s work and the lived experience of language and race, though all are welcome to attend.
We use Zoom videoconferencing for our online classes. In this webinar format, you will see the teacher and host, but you will not be seen. You will be able to ask questions during the webinar by typing them.
You will need to have a computer/mobile device. Calling in by phone is also possible but not preferred. All registered participants will be sent a link to the video recording approximately two weeks following the class. So if you are unable to attend the live webinar, you will still be able to view it.
Bio
Eric Severson is a philosopher specializing in the work of Emmanuel Levinas. He is the author of Before Ethics (Kendall-Hunt, 2021), Levinas's Philosophy of Time (Duquesne University Press, 2013) and Scandalous Obligation (Beacon Hill Press, 2011), and editor of eight other books on philosophy, psychology, ethics, theology and the philosophy of religion. He lives in Kenmore, Washington and teaches philosophy at Seattle University.
