Tuesday, April 7, 2026 from 9:00am to 11:00am New York time
Class will be recorded for all registrants and available for viewing for one month.
Presenter: Hideo Tanaka, Ph.D.
Moderator: Akira Ikemi, Ph.D.
This offering is in English.
In the opening of A Process Model, Gendlin states, “I shall lay down some terms as if they came out of nowhere.” This could be interpreted as a caution against relying on prior research. However, as Schoeller & Dunaetz (2018) point out, the terms are “implicitly loaded with the history of ideas, with direct and indirect allusions and references to thinkers on whose shoulders Gendlin stands.”
In this presentation, Hideo will select some key terms such as “metaphor,” “reversal,” “crossing,” and “retroactive time” from Gendlin's writings represented by Experiencing and the Creation of Meaning (Gendlin, 1962/1997), Thinking Beyond Patterns (Gendlin, 1991), and A Process Model (Gendlin, 1997/2018) and explain the prior research by related thinkers and philosophers on these terms.
All are welcome. This presentation is intended especially for anyone who has tried reading the three writings above by Gendlin but found them challenging.
Format
We use Zoom videoconferencing for our online classes. In this webinar format, you will see the presenter and host, but you will not be seen. You will be able to ask questions during the webinar by typing them. Highlights presenters may at times invite a small number of participants to unmute or join them onscreen during the webinar (optional).
You will need to have a computer/mobile device. Calling in by phone is also possible but not preferred. All registered participants will be sent a link to the video recording approximately two weeks following the class. So if you are unable to attend the live webinar, you will still be able to view it for one month.
