Can Focusers with limited fluency in a common language have meaningful Focusing partnership exchanges?
They can, using a process called Cross-lingual Focusing, created by Robert Lott Lee, Ph.D.
Robert has taught Cross-lingual Focusing at numerous international gatherings like The Weeklong and International Conferences over the years. In this Focusing Highlight, we are thrilled that he will give a presentation about what Cross-lingual Focusing is, and he will also facilitate a demonstration between two people who don't know each others' languages, giving participants a thorough introduction to it.
At the annual Focusing Weeklongs, Cross-lingual Focusing has proven to be one of the most meaningful learnings, bringing people together in delightful and unexpected ways. This is a chance to learn it from the master and originator of the method.
Cross-lingual Focusing is based on the 3 domains of Domain Focusing: Thinking, Felt Sensing and Self-Empathy. In Domain Focusing we indicate which domain we are in by actually moving from one chair to another. In Cross-lingual Focusing, this idea has been adapted by having you give non-verbal signals to your partner, to let them know which domain you are functioning in. While a knowledge of Domain Focusing will deepen your understanding of this powerful practice, anyone can get enormous benefit from even a brief experience of Cross-lingual Focusing. It will open up new possibilities in your practice.
As an added deepening, Robert will share how Eugene Gendlin's philosophical concept of Holding and Letting from A Process Model (Chapter VIII) represents the movement between domains.
The Cross-lingual Focusing process has the power to not only enable successful Focusing exchanges between partners, but also to play a small part in giving world peace a chance.
Some experience with Focusing will be helpful, though all are welcome.
Format
We use Zoom videoconferencing for our online classes. In this webinar format, you will see the presenter and host, but you will not be seen. You will be able to ask questions during the webinar by typing them. Highlights presenters may at times invite a small number of participants to unmute or join them onscreen during the webinar (optional).
You will need to have a computer/mobile device. Calling in by phone is also possible but not preferred. All registered participants will be sent a link to the video recording approximately two weeks following the class. So if you are unable to attend the live webinar, you will still be able to view it for one month.
Bio
Robert Lott Lee, Ph.D.
Robert developed "Domain Focusing" a method that makes "Felt-Sensing" more accessible. His approach reintegrates thinking into the process and actively includes empathy, love, and compassion. He works on developing ways to make Focusing more accessible to people who are interested in personal growth and transpersonal practices. Robert also created "Changing the Unchangeable through Focusing", a method for resolving seemingly impossible dilemmas. This allows change without taking a long time or being too expensive. Additionally, he initiated the "Cross-Lingual Focusing Partnership Exchange", which enables Focusing in Partnership between people who speak different languages. This strengthens the global Focusing community and contributes to world peace. His book Making Sense of a Time: A Therapeutic Focusing Memoir was published in July 2025.
