kye Note from Catherine

Dear Focusing Community -

Hello!  It is a real delight to be able to greet you as the Focusing Institute's new Executive Director.  Focusing changed my life when I learned it back in 1996, and I immediately was eager to teach it to others, having first been certified by the Institute for Bio-Spiritual Research in 1998 and then certified again by the Focusing Institute in 2009.  What a privilege it is to be present when someone has that "ah-hah" moment, where they experience the tremendous well of compassion and love and grace inside themselves that they didn't realize was there.  Over and over again I have been moved with wonder by seeing the parts of ourselves that we've most dreaded (or even hated) transform into wise counsellors and beloved companions.  What a gift Focusing has given the world!

We have an amazing international community of Focusers, burgeoning with wisdom and goodwill. As I take up this mantle, I do so humbly, with enormous respect for those who founded and maintained the Institute over many decades. Most especially, of course, I am grateful to Gene Gendlin for developing Focusing; by naming and articulating this natural human process, he made it more accessible to all of us. Doralee Grindler Katonah, Janet Klein, Mary McGuire and Mary Hendricks all built the Institute from its earliest days with a vision that Focusing would spread everywhere in innumerable ways; Melinda Darer nurtured and developed many of the people and programs that have become the heart and soul of TFI today; and finally Kye Nelson helped usher the Institute into this new era.  I am grateful to them all and in awe of their various incredible talents.

Though someone must be the identified leader of any organization, and I happen to be the one in that role now, it is all of you who will continue to be the force which shapes and carries forward our common vision.  During this transitional time, I hope that we can have an "Everybody, all in!" approach.  Together, let us protect what has been life-giving in our work, and find a way together to make adjustments and changes when what we've been doing does not serve our future well.  I am not planning to do my work alone!  Why would I, when there is so much brilliance, energy and dynamism among all of you, all over the globe?

So, please, reach out to me and continue reaching out to one another and let us carry life and thought forward, together.

- Catherine Torpey, Executive Director, The Focusing Institute

FISS 2014: 9th Annual Focusing Institute Summer School

August 15-21, 2014 at Garrison Institute in Garrison, New York

Beginners Welcome!

garrisonHow would you like to spend one week of your summer vacation at the Focusing Institute Summer School (FISS) learning more about Focusing than you ever thought possible?

Imagine yourself developing an "emotional muscle" to deal with difficult situations that consist of fear, stress and frustration. Imagine yourself becoming your own best friend feeling safe and at home within yourself. By learning Focusing and making it part of your daily living, you dip into the implicit treasures of your body wisdom. Thus, you become a leader who chooses the right next step in challenging times.

Ordinarily you'd have to travel around the world to study with these five master Focusing teachers... but this week they're going to be all in one place, creating an opportunity for going in depth with Focusing and many of its special applications: to health and healing, to thinking, to dreams, to psychotherapy, to spirituality, and much much more! New to Focusing? You're welcome too! You'll be able to immerse yourself in the company of one teacher and sample all five... make it a time of intensive study or more like a holiday with lots of play and fun... and you'll be in a warm and connected community of Focusing people from all over the world.

The Summer School is appropriate for anyone, at all levels of Focusing, from beginners to Focusing teachers, for both personal and professional development. Bring a friend and get a discount! Fees are based on date that the order is placed and on type of room selection.

If you would like to join us and need to work out a different financial arrangement, e.g a monthly payment plan, please contact Elizabeth Cantor: 845-362-5222 or
